Thank You Heero
Raindrops plashed softly against Heero Yuy's bedroom
window. Pale sunlight trickled down from the sky through heavy clouds,
casting cold rays through vertical blinds, one of them falling across
Duo Maxwell's A soft rumble in the clouds rolled over Heero's apartment,
and Duo's right eye fluttered open. He shifted again, moving his head
so that the sunray missed his eye. As he did, an arm across his waist
flexed. Duo "So warm," he thought. "Wanna stay here forever." He thought about all that had happened in the past twenty-four hours. * * * Nine a.m. yesterday found Duo's eyes fluttering open as he lay in an open trench outside an Oz base. Mud slicked his face; he was dazed, confused. "My Gundam - why am I not with Deathscythe?" Duo couldn't remember anything. He tried to move, but a sharp pain tore through one knee. "Gah," the boy cried. He tried to sit up, struggling with the effort. "I found him!" Duo turned to the voice behind him, and saw Trowa standing in the rain. "It wasn't raining when the battle started," Duo said idly. Trowa ignored his words. "Can you get up, Duo? You took a nasty blow to the head when you were thrown from your Gundam." "I did?" Duo tried to stand, but his knee gave way. Trowa hurried to catch him, jumping down into the ditch. Trowa slung Duo's arm across his shoulders and moved to the edge of the ditch, trying to keep from slipping in the mud. Heero appeared and helped Duo out of Trowa's grasp. He gave Duo a quick, tight hug. "Can't lose you, now, can we?" Heero's _expression was deadpan, but there was something in his eyes that spoke of more than mission. * * * That evening Duo woke to find himself swathed in soft blankets. He was on the overstuffed sofa in Heero's apartment. Thunder and lightning crackled in the black sky outside. "Duo?" Sitting on the floor beside him was Heero Yuy, His eyes looked tired, but he was alert. "Heero, what happened?" "You were thrown from your Gundam during the battle." "But how? I - I woke up in a ditch, and Trowa was there, and - and -" "Hush," Heero said gently, putting two fingers on Duo's lips. "There'll be time enough for telling you what happened, okay? The important thing is that you're safe." "Wh - where are we, Heero?" "At my apartment. I convinced the others that I needed to isolate you. This is the last place anyone would look for us right now." "But -" "I said, 'hush,' Duo. You need to rest. Can you stand?" "I think so." "Here, let me help you." * * * Sometime during the evening Heero had smoothed the sheets of his bed and carefully walked Duo there. Duo felt soft cotton, warm hands gently moving his legs. And then sleep came. He woke in the night, wide eyes wild with terror when lightning seared the sky and thunder crashed crazily against the clouds. He yelled Heero's name, and the boy was there in an instant, jumping up from his makeshift bed on the couch, running to Duo's side. "I'm here, Duo, it's alright." "Bu - but -" "Shhh." "I wa - was so -" "Hushhhh." Soft lips near Duo's ear. "I - I -" Without a word, without taking his hand off of Duo's shoulder, Heero carefully climbed onto the bed. He turned Duo on his side, lay down behind him, and pressed his chest against Duo's back. "It's okay, Duo. I'm here. It's okay." A gentle hand stroked Duo's long, long hair. Slowly he began to relax, finally he glided to sleep. * * * Soft breath on his shoulder now, a warm arm draped across
his waist, Heero's chest slowly expanding, contracting, expanding
against Duo's back. Duo took Heero's hand, pulled it to his lips.
He tenderly kissed "Thank you," he whispered. "Thank you, Heero." ~ Owari ~ |
